Uppsala University is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our mission is to pursue top-quality research and education and to interact constructively with society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 42,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of SEK 6.7 billion.
The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology is housed in the Uppsala Biomedical Center (BMC), and is organized in six research programs (Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, Microbiology, Molecular Biophysics, Molecular Evolution, Molecular Systems Biology, Structure and Molecular Biology). The Department’s 220 employees represent 37 research groups, with 20 professors in a broad range of different subject areas.
SciLifeLab (www.scilifelab.se) is a Swedish national center for molecular biosciences with focus on health and environmental research. The center combines frontline technical expertise with advanced knowledge of translational medicine and molecular bioscience. SciLifeLab is hosted by four Swedish universities (Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University and Uppsala University) and collaborates with several other universities.
SciLifeLab invites applications for Postdoc positions in the groups of our SciLifeLab Faculty.
Duties: Cloning, expression, purification and assay of proteins of interest for drug design, particularly ones from Plasmodium falciparum and the ESKAPE bacteria that account for the majority of hospital-acquired infections. Purified proteins will be characterized in enzyme assays, as well as using biophysical methods, with the aim of identifying inhibitor molecules that can provide leads for drug design. The proteins will also be crystallized, and their structures solved in complex with molecules of interest, to gain insights needed for the generation of improved inhibitors.
Requirements: PhD in biochemistry or X-ray crystallography, or equivalent. To be eligible to apply you must have a PhD completed within three years of the application deadline. If you received your PhD earlier but special circumstances exist you are also eligible to apply. Good understanding of protein chemistry and basic biological processes, including the links between protein structure and function, is required. Practical experience in the characterization of proteins (enzyme and other assays), as well as molecular biological methods such as cloning, expression in E. coli and purification, are also required. Experience with protein crystallization and X-ray crystallographic methods would be an advantage.
Additional qualifications: Strong competence in written and spoken English.
Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
