Application expert - medical research supercomputer systems
Sort on published: 2017-09-26
Uppsala University is an international research university focused on the development of science and education. Our most important assets are all the individuals who with their curiosity and their dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting work places. Uppsala University has 40,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of SEK 6,5 billion.
Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab, www.scilifelab.se) is as a national infrastructure supporting advanced high-throughput life science research. SciLifeLab has in recent years launched initiatives around precision medicine, resulting in rapidly increasing data volumes and computing resources, with specific requirements on secure data handling.
We are now looking for a computer scientist or a technically skilled bioinformatics expert to handle technical challenges on the secure compute clusters at the national supercomputer center Uppmax (www.uppmax.uu.se), to enable high-impact medical research. The position is placed at the department of Cell and Molecular Biology (ICM) in Uppsala as part of the Bioinformatics Long-term Support team at NBIS/SciLifeLab (www.nbis.se), and you will thereby be tightly connected to several of the largest ongoing sequencing projects in Sweden. Your role will be to work with systems experts, application experts, and bioinformatics research scientists to identify and remove technical roadblocks and enable world-leading research.
Medical bioinformatics research requires a broad and dynamic range of software, and involves large data volumes. The work will include software and database installations, with specific workarounds to accommodate for smooth operations without direct Internet access. Our major system runs an OpenStack environment and currently holds 200 compute nodes and 6 PB storage space. The system is recently in build-up phase with a dozen of large projects being analyzed at the moment, but is expected to scale up to hundreds of users within the next 1-2 years.
We believe that you have a MSc in computer science or engineering (or have acquired equivalent technical skills through a PhD or working experience in a relevant field). Documented skills in software and database installation are required, and experience from large-scale compute environments is a merit. Ability to handle both English and Swedish as a working language is a requirement.
The position is for 2 years, starting as soon as possible.
For more information, please contact Björn Nystedt, joint head of facility, Bioinformatics Long-term Support, National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden at SciLifeLab, firstname.lastname@example.org, 018-471 44 13.
You are welcome to submit your application no later than 2017-10-10, UFV-PA 2017/2995.
