The lecture is an opportunity for the lecturer to demonstrate their suitability for admittance as an associate professor. Hence, the topic will be presented in a way that should not only be accessible to students and others with a basic academic education in environmental sciences, but may also be of interest to a broader audience.

The Convention on Biological Diversity’s 2010 target was to halt biodiversity loss, which has been reasserted in its current mission (2011-2020) and, in 2015, by the Sustainable Development Goals. Yet despite these international commitments, important ecosystems across Europe continue to be degraded and biodiversity loss is accelerating. In an effort to reverse these negative trends, there has been a steady shift from a focus on conserving biodiversity for its own sake to promoting the concept of ecosystem services (ES) provided by biodiversity that are a prerequisite for human survival and well-being. Both the scientific literature and governmental policies reveal a wide array of expectations about the ES concept. As it draws attention to the benefits people receive from nature, it is seen as a tool for recognising the dependence of humans on natural systems. As such, use of the ES concept is seen as an instrument for encouraging decision-makers to take account of the value of biodiversity. A key expectation is that attention to the ES concept will induce change in and improve implementation of policies that have implications for biodiversity.
During the lecture, the concept of ES will be introduced and its potential to inform environmental decisions will be discussed. In addition, consideration of ES in practical decisions in Sweden will be explored and existing challenges for implementation of the ES concept and potential solutions will be presented.
