PhD students in the Faculty of Technology and Science.
This course is a follow-up on the mandatory course of Ethics in Technology and Science I. Its aim is to give participants deeper knowledge in research ethics, ethical theories related to technology and science, and train skills in handling ethical issues and participating in a dialog with stakeholders and society.
LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR DOCTORAL DEGREE
This course directly addresses the PhD degree objectives of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance. The PhD student should show intellectual independence and scientific honesty, as well as the ability to make research ethical judgments. Also, a degree objective is to show an in-depth understanding in the possibilities and limitations of science, its role in society and people’s responsibility for how it is used. Ethical competence is a prerequisite for the PhD title according to Swedish law and the general study plan for third-cycle education at the Faculty of Science and Technology.
Deeper discussion of ethical theories connected to research, technology and natural science. Application and practice of ethical skills connected to project proposals, research cooperation, conducting research, publishing and applying research findings as well as training for applying to the ethical vetting process.
Lectures, seminars and guest lectures. The lectures focus on theoretical aspects of philosophy, ethics, technology and science. One lecture is on methods and tools to analyze ethical problems.
The seminars focus on using practical methods to handle research ethics problems connected to technology and science, and on making an application to Swedish Ethical Review Authority.
The course is examined through active and mandatory participation in the lectures, group work, seminars and individual essay.
