LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course addresses the PhD examination goals described under: "Knowledge and understanding". "Competence and skills" and "Judgement and approach". This is done by introducing the student to different tools both physically in terms of infrastructure giving the student information of different scientific methods and approaches as well as resources at the university, but also tools in terms of judgement to approach science as in philosophy of science. The course also introduces the examination goals in terms of how to approach good scientific practice and how to write a scientific paper or application. One part deals with the goal "contributing to society and how to support the learning of others" which is done through training in science outreach, communication training and an introduction to popular science.

LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR DOCTORAL DEGREE 

The course introduces the student to the different examination goals and what the students need to reach examination goals (see also learning outcomes above).

COURSE CONTENTS

The course is directed towards the three biology departments and geosciences. The content is the same for all departments considering the organization of PhD studies, philosophy of science, library service, how to write an application, research ethics, equal opportunity issues etc., but differ between biology and geosciences considering administrative routines, research facilities and other more local relevant information.

The course consists of lectures, discussions and exercises.
