First grants to WISE projects at Uppsala University

WISE, the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability, is the largest ever investment in materials science in Sweden with initial research funding totalling SEK 260 million. Ninety projects, including 13 at Uppsala University, have now been granted support by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, KAW.
The aim of the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability research programme is to create conditions for a sustainable society through new and improved materials and manufacturing processes. These will enable better technologies for future energy systems and the control of pollution and toxic emissions.
When WISE launched its first call for PhD and post-doctoral projects, 193 researchers applied for grants. The call was primarily aimed at researchers at the seven WISE-affiliated universities: Uppsala University, Chalmers University of Technology, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Linköping University, Lund University, Luleå University of Technology, Stockholm University and partner groups at Umeå University and Karlstad University.
“The awarded project grants are of very high quality and of relevance to sustainability, and will be led by very prominent researchers”, says Magnus Berggren, Director of WISE.
At Uppsala University, 13 projects are now funded:

- Project: Solvated Metal Oxides for Energy Storage: Proton Dynamics in Confinement (postdoc project). Project leader: Chao Zhang, Department of Chemistry - Ångström Laboratory
- Project: Non-toxic, inorganic wide band gap thin films for tandem solar cells (postdoc project). Project leader: Charlotte Platzer Björkman, Department of Materials Science and Engineering
- Project: Thermophotovoltaic heat engines based on low band-gap environmentally friendly quantum dots (postdoc project). Project leader: Erik Johansson, Department of Chemistry - Ångström Laboratory
- Project: Interface modification of perovskite optoelectronics by organic dye molecules (PhD student project). Project leader: Gerrit Boschloo, Department of Chemistry - Ångström
- Project: Design and Mechanistic Study of Sn-based Catalysts from Cu Doping and Molecule-Material Interface Modification for Carbon Dioxide Reduction (postdoc project). Project leader: Haining Tian, Department of Chemistry - Ångström Laboratory
